A mother blessing for my blogger mama friends

Two of my dear blogging friends are at the cusp of something great in their lives within just a few weeks of each other. Aine, who is taking a blogging break from her wonderful blog And My Baby, has just given birth to her second child but first beautiful baby girl, Miss Mouse, a little sister for Little M. And Lisa who blogs at mama.ie is expecting a baby in a few short weeks, also her second baby but first little girl, greatly anticipated by big brother Little Man. What an adventure for them both! To celebrate this exciting time for them and their growing families, The Irish Parenting Bloggers Group are throwing a virtual baby shower all this month to share their joy and wish them well. I am privileged to start the ball rolling on this first day and I’d like to begin with a mother blessing to Aine and Lisa – a celebration of this new phase of your mothering journeys.

You’ve both been here before. The intoxicating smell of a newborn, who curls up in a ball at your breast with her knees folded to her chest and her fists tight around her tiny face. Looking down you can see now exactly how she fit in your belly for all those months. The pillow soft body that fits comfortably in the crook of one arm. The fluttering eyes as she drifts off to sleep at the end of a feed. The soft purring as she dreams on your chest. That milky smell from her warm breathe. Those tiny nails that peel away with a little coaxing. That insistent rooting nudged by an empty tummy and that beautiful but heartbreaking mew when she calls out to you. Those silent moments in the late night darkness, where exhausted headiness mixes with a stillness of holding a moment and being present in it, knowing that this, this – just you and me, tiny baby – I’ll remember this forever when it has long passed.

You’ve both been here before alright but it’s still so completely brand new. It’s a girl! It’s a little sister! Now there’s two! Where once you were both the mother of a boy, your mothering horizons are extending to take in a girl. There’s new territory ahead – in mothering a girl, in mothering a boy not the only apple in mama’s eye now, in mothering the boy and girl together as you all figure it out together. As your houses fill with the joyful sounds of children, I wish you both well at this magical time of new birth, new life, new love and experiences. Being the strong, vibrant, vivacious, powerful women I know you are, I already see that you will take it in your stride and when the times are tough, know that we, your online blogging family, are here for you – to hear you, support you and cheer you on. From one mama to two mamas further down their mothering path than I, I send you warm, heartfelt mother blessings for this wonderful rich time of your lives. I watch you with wonder and with pencil in hand. I’ve learned so much from both of your experiences in the past, I look forward to learning so much more.

With much, much love to you and your families xxxxx

  1. Thank you for such a beautiful blessing! This week, I met my new baby nephew for the first time, and seeing his newness and smallness has brought memories of those fleeting newborn snuggles and cuddles flooding back. It’s hard to believe that I’ll have another newborn of my own in just a few short weeks. A new parenting adventure awaits!

  2. This is one of the most beautiful posts I have ever read, it really captures the joy of a little sister, a big brother, a new sibling, a daughter, a new child who will take their place in their family.

  3. So lovely. This brings back so many memories of when I had each of my girls. Being a mother is so special, and being a mother of a girl is amazing. Welcome to the club Lisa and Aine!

  4. Thank you all for the lovely comments. The images are by Veronice Petrie who has some really beautiful illustrations available on her website.
Looking forward to all the virtual baby shower posts! xx

  5. Thank you Mrs. Mind The Baby ; ) Reeeeeaaaally wanting to use your real name here…! What a beautiful mother blessing : ) I did read as you posted but with my arms full I am only getting around to posting a comment now. I’m into week 5 (today!) of the delicious newborn-ness and I am so glad to say that I have savoured (& still am!) the milky smell, the curling up, the chest-sleeping and I just don’t want it all to pass too quickly. I’m happy to say that second time around, all the new mama stress is no more & there is all the time in the world to love, love, love, cuddle, cuddle, cuddle, hold, hold, hold, feed, feed, feed, smell, smell, smell, adore, adore, adore… Thank you for this beautiful post, I have also learned a lot from you…a lot : ) and I am still basking in the after-glow of the most gentle & beautiful birth ever. So thank you for that.

What do you think?
